Once a soul is chosen, she brings it down to earth and plants it as a seed in the mother's womb. There she proceeds to tell the soul the secrets of the world: the languages of the animals and of the wind plus the history of that soul, it's past and future. When the time comes to lead the child into the world, she touches the baby's upper lip, creating an indention, as a reminder to keep this knowledge a secret. I would also prefer only or mostly keyboard examples, the simpler, the better.
With some examples you have to take your time to do reductions. It gives a good review of the times. One of the ways we do that is by telling stories, by sharing them. Similarly, this book goes through many, many, interesting topics in biology and chemistry. Hurricanes and wildfires might leave you more time to prepare, but a lot of smaller disasters don't. Older children who are independent readers will be able to handle the text but younger kids will enjoy hearing the stories more in a storytime setting.
The illustrations, linoleum block prints painted with watercolor, are well done, but they probably aren't plentiful enough to keep the attention of younger children in a one-on-one reading. It was a good time to be in business: Nesi recounts sales visits to Germany during which orders were written
